Who doesn’t like the S-XGen? This guy.

With seven articles on the S-XGen in my inbox (via google alerts) by 7:00am this morning you’d think that the SX-Gen is the next big thing. But let’s take a look at this gadget.

From article:

“The S-XGen is a handheld device that eliminates the need for a separate laptop, cellular phone, Tablet PC and PDA. WiFi, Bluetooth and tri-band cellular wireless technology as well as Ethernet connectivity come standard with S-XGen as does both USB and RJ45 input options. Built with an Intel PXA 270 Xscaleâ„¢ 520 MHz processor, the base unit includes 256MB of RAM and a 20GB hard drive. The S-XGen comes with Microsoft® Windows® CE 5.0 and is ready to run Microsoft Office® Mobile Suite (included).

The total size of the S-XGen is approximately 6.5 inches long by 3.8 inches wide and it weighs only 14 oz. The unit comes with a 4-inch TFT 470 x 280 resolution monitor / touch screen, a built-in 280 pixel web video camera and functionality buttons for gaming applications, camera and computing. The S-XGen is also uniquely designed with a Qwerty near full-size fold-out keyboard and a battery life rated at an industry high of 8 hours of use.

The MSRP of the S-XGen with Microsoft Office included is $1,400.00. Units are available for immediate delivery. ”

Ok let’s look at what they are offering us in this new gadget… Bluetooth good, WIFI, RJ45 useful, but it’s only got a 520mHz Xscale processor and will be running Windows CE. Oh and costing the poor purchaser $14000! You Have Got To Be Kidding Me!

To put this into perspective, you get a screen that is less than the 7in screen on any of the current UMPC’s, you get CE not XP, you get a slower processor, and you pay more!?!? I don’t get it. Realistically this device is on par with a higher end Dell Axim, that’s it.

I will give the S-XGen that it has some sort of cellular connectivity and the keyboard that it seems everyone wants on their UMPC, but to be what described by some as the end all and be all of UMPCs, try again. The UMPC-like device that is worth keeping an eye on in my opinion is the Kohjinsha SA1F00A. Steve over at Carrypad managed to get his hands on one, and thus far has only great things to say about it.

CES Predictions

Ok,  I think i’ll make a few predictions about the UMPC happenings at CES.

– UMPC wont necessarily be getting small but they will be getting more features.

– A UMPC will be announced that offers cellular data capabilities for the US.

– GPS will be a common feature, not just an add on.

– Software.  Companies will be customizing for the UMPC, and the UMPC team will have great upgrades to shower upon the UMPC community.

Now let’s wait and see what comes to light.

Help! I’ve been tagged!

Now I know that I’ve been doing this sort of thing since high school and the days of my livejournal account which will not be named, but it appears that Microsoft Tablet MVP, Hugo Ortega has tagged me in this most recent MEME which has caught on the blogosphere like the flu. I’ve seen this MEME everywhere and finally caught it!

Here are 5 things my readers may not know about me:
1) I accumulated 22 college credits taking dual enrollment while still in high school.
2) It is very rare for me to sit down in front of a television and watch an entire show. This is usually limited to The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Office, or Robot Chicken.
3) My first blog post ever was on a newly created LiveJournal account (back when you needed to be “invited”) on January 19th, 2002. I guess I’m nearing the 5 year mark of my blogging existence.
4) I am a member of the West Michigan .NET Users Group Board. (I’m also slowly but steadily working on a new website for the users group)
5) I was a Microsoft Student Ambassador for Grand Valley State University for the 2005-2006 school year.

Here are the 5 lucky people who I’m tagging to have fun with this MEME:
Fellow UMPC enthusiasts (addicts) Thoughtfix of UltraMobileGeek and Frank/Ctitanic from Ultra Mobile PC Tips
Former C# MVP and current Microsoft Employee Eric Maino who writes C# Tea Time
C# MVP Martin Shoemaker who writes at TabletUMLNews.com
And if I could I would like to tag Mr. Shel Israel. It appears Shel had already been tagged on December 10th.
Hmm, I would like to tag my friend Jeff Lakin. He’s got a great music related blog which everyone should check out.

New software creates more uses for UMPC

I came across a press release today from GiveMePower for their new software PowerCAD “Turn-On-and-Go”. The press release states they have created a new piece of software specifically for Ultra Mobile Devices to aid in building construction. The software provides “solutions for building surveying and inspection, construction area estimating and reporting, and facilities asset and information management – featuring hardware from mobility market leaders Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) and Tablet Kiosk.”
