Bit of news on the Origami Experience

Look what I found in my inbox yesterday!

Hi Matt,

Sorry for the slow reply, I’m just getting back into the office after vacation. Origami Experience will be available in about a week, so you won’t have to wait much longer.

Looking forward to your feedback when you get it installed and have a chance to use it.

Thanks!

Samsung Q1b, meet Vista.

So i’ve finally done it. Last Friday I decided to download Vista Ultimate via MSDN. It finished about midnight, and shortly thereafter I began the install. For the most part it went smooth, without a hitch. So now after we’ve fixed a TIP problem (no HID drivers) I’ve got the machine running decently.

On the post-install driver setup:

I give credit to the author of the blog dobal.ch I had followed those steps for the most part. Here’s what went down…. Head over to the Samsung site. For the Q1b download the drivers for sound and graphics. I downloaded software for Magic Keyboard and MenuUI.

Now the problem I’d run into at this point was how the heck do I input text without using a keyboard? After asking around JKK, and Kevin C. Tofel both pointed me to the answer.

My Thoughts:

Wow. Vista is really nice on the UMPC. Granted the machine only has 512MB, which at time is noticeably sluggish. Having the media center on it is amazing. Can I get the experience pack please!?! Surely more Vista-friendly posts will follow, but for now I leave you with some pictures.

Let’s start a UMPC Meme!

For those who aren’t too sure, I’m putting a link to the UMPC wikipedia page here.

Hugo, for the record you tagged me a few weeks back and since then have been thinking of a way to create a Meme related to the UMPC and finally have figured it out!

TOPIC: The Ideal UMPC Day – You’ve got one day, 24 hours, to do whatever, whereever with the UMPC model of your choice. Where do you go, and what do you do?

RULES: Tag 2 more people, and see where their ideal UMPC day takes them!

MY RESPONSE:
First use the Q1b to get a ticket for the earliest flight to Seattle from Grand Rapids. Use Microsoft Streets and Trips with the GPS module on my Q1b to head to trip to the airport where I hop on a flight to the Seattle/Tacoma airport, then to 1 Microsoft Way to meet up w/ the Origami team for a chat possibly lunch. Of course I would have been using the Q1 to watch movies or come up with ideas to chat with the UMPC team about while on the flight. Then, after lunch, once again plug into the GPS module to get directions to my buddy Eric‘s office, grab him and our other buddy from Bellevue before heading over to Puget Sound for an afternoon of crabbing. While on the dock surf the WIFI for the way to serve up the afternoons catch. Then after dinner I’d probably want to use the Q1 to blog about the adventure before heading out w/ friends to the W Hotel and Bar for a few drinks. Then after an exhausting day just relax a bit and read a few blogs on the Q1 with Google Reader before bed.

The iPhone is not for me

Nope, i will not have it!  I’m not a fan of the iPhone.  I will admit that it is damn sexy, and a sleek gadget for sure but it is not for me.  This post is pretty much in regards to Elliot Swan’s post stating that he NEEDS an iPhone.  I on the other hand, do not.

Now, I think I need to quantify this previous statement. No, it’s not because i’m a PC user, no it is not because i “favor” Microsoft.  Here’s why I don’t want to spend the $500 (last price i’ve heard on its cost) on the phone.  I simply do not need a phone that is so expensive.  I just got a Motorola PEBL about 6 months ago and it works just fine (aside from a T-Mobile contract).  Also I had heard that the iPhone will only be available for Cingular and AT&T customers.  I guess that counts me out of a possible phone upgrade had i wanted one?

Also another reason, Ultra Mobile PC.  Yep, I purchased my UMPC a few months back and I use it one heck of a lot more than my phone.  I’m pretty certain call computer related tasks the iPhone can do, my UMPC can do (I will not make a statement regarding which could perform these tasks better).

Oh and in other news, good ole’ Chippy from Carrypad just pointed out to me that Cisco is currently suing Apple over the iPhone!  HA-HA!
