Coheed and Cambria News and Review

So it isn’t often that I take up this topic however these past 48 hours have been interesting to say the least.

For that past 5 or so years if anyone would ask me my favorite band I would reply “Coheed and Cambria”. Now on October 31st they had released ”The Last Supper: Live at Hammerstein Ballroom” DVD. I didn’t receive this until last night. About 15 minutes ago I checked their fan site Cobalt and Calcium and found the very depressing news that their drummer and bassist have both left the band. Now they had been on a bit of a hiatus from touring with the band and temporary replacements had been found. So no, the band is not breaking up; however the lineup which I’ve listened to since the middle of 2001 is no longer together.

Live at Hammerstein Ballroom CoverThe Last Supper: Live at Hammerstein Ballroom – Coheed And Cambria – released 10/31/06
The band for as long as I can remember has had a phenomenal live show. That is the one reason I would jump at any DVD which they release. This one is no exception. Their concert is shot from many angles and the audio balance seems to be done quite well. In their previous DVD “Live at Starland Ballroom” it seemed as though there was more audio balance given to the instruments than the vocals, this is NOT the case with this DVD. Per usual they’ve got a bit of a jam session at the end of their last song, which happens to be The Final Cut. I would say that this DVD lacks tracks from Coheed’s first album Second Stage Turbine Blade; however it is still a great example of their musicianship and their great live performances. I would recommend it to any Coheed fan.

Q1b: The Review

Flickr set here.

Overview:

On Tuesday October 24, 2006 my Q1b which I had ordered from CDW finally arrived. My initial reaction was something similar to a child opening up Christmas gifts. The device came with the battery, hand strap, manuals, recovery CDs and a 3M cleaning cloth. (this little guy helps with the fingerprints!) I was really surprised at the brightness and clarity of the screen. I’ve watched several movie trailers now on the Q1b and the screen seems brighter than my laptop.

Pricing:

The UMPC cost $899, after tax and shipping I paid $967. Reasonable. My main gripe with UMPC’s was that they needed to be below $1000 for me to be able to afford one. I guess $967 is as close as I was going to get.

My Impressions of the Device:

So far I’ve taken it to class a few times and am really impressed at how snappy it has been responding. On average I’ve found that I’m running between 36 and 39 processes, which I’d actually like to cut back a bit if possible. I’ve loaded up a few movies which seem to play back well. I say well because I’m no audio engineer; however the playback is clear, both visually and in terms of audio. I have also found OneNote to be incredibly useful after a short bout with the learning curve of using the touch screen. I’ve actually found myself just today browsing my professor’s PowerPoint presentations after class while on the bus back to my apartment. I’d never done that with my laptop.

I’ve found myself using my Q1b downstairs in the kitchen of living room browsing email or the web while just sitting around. One problem I’ve noticed float tip doesn’t play nice with Trillian even though I’ve made the changes to fix the IE7 bug which reared its ugly head earlier this week. In terms of resolution, I’ve most often kept 800×600 on most of the time. I’ve found it to be a happy medium for most purposes.

To conclude, I’m happy with my (rather expensive) purchase. The device is serving my needs and I couldn’t really ask for much more. I would like to try out a few things in the future; I’m not much of a gamer; however I would like to try to install a game or two to try on the Q1b. Also I would be interested in possibly installing an in car setup in my Civic, so that I wouldn’t get quite so lost on some of these Michigan highways. Also Vista awaits in the future. I’m sure I’ll be writing about that adventure when I decide to embark upon it.

The Test Results:

One fat R2H up for adoption!

Ignar over at Origami Project Forums got his hands on a brand new R2H and didn’t have very much good to say about the device.

“When UMPC is thicker than a regular laptop which has full size keyboard, larger and wider screen, higher resolution, faster processor, more memory, faster and larger hard drive, internal DVD RW, longer battery life, and more ports, I don’t really see the point of UMPC. Yes, that’s my first impression on R2H when I compared it to my Fujitsu P7120.”

Ouch!  He’s started a thread at Origami Project Forums letting everyone know why this device didn’t work for him.

Not to be a total downer, he’s put the R2H up for sale.  Here’s the info on cost:

“Asking $945 including Priority mail shipping. Paypal is preferred. Cashier’s check or money order is fine, too. I have 100% positive ratings at eBay and eBay ID can be provided upon request.”  More info is available about the sale at http://www.gottabemobile.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=506

Let’s find this R2H a new loving home!

I’ll just keep waiting…

So I’ve had more than a few requests to run some tests on my Q1b. No problem, i’d like to know the information too. So I run the COSBI test, the 3DMark test, then try to run the Battery Eater test to check battery drain.  Twice now i’ve set up the test, started it, then several hours later returned to find this:

Really, now it’s a little difficult to write a comprehensive review with this type of error.  Now Error B means what exactly?  Does anyone know what that may be an indication of?
Now realistically I hope to have a comprehensive review up by the end of the week.  As long as I can get some sort of results on battery drain 🙂
